Clarification regarding change of credit terminology beginning in the 2024-2025 academic year
Dear Students,
By decision of the Bar-Ilan University administration, credit specification at Bar-Ilan University will now be semester-based rather than year-based.
From now on, a yearlong course of 2 ש”ש (2 annual hours, also referred to as N.K.Z.) will be specified as 4 academic credits (N.Z.) , or simply 4 “credits”.
A course of 1 ש”ש (1 annual hour) will, from now on, be specified as 2 credits (N.Z.).
Please note that the number of required hours for Basic Jewish Studies has not changed – only the method of calculation has changed. That is, if in the past the Basic Jewish Studies requirement for the bachelor's degree was 10 ש”ש (N.K.Z.), at present that same number of course hours are required but are calculated on a semester basis, and thus are specified as 20 credits (N.Z.); an equivalent change in calculation method has gone into effect for graduate studies.
Be sure to calculate your credits correctly so that you do not end up with an insufficient number of credits at the end of your studies.
Wishing you success,
The School for Basic Jewish Studies Office
