Warsaw Uprising's last survivor

Dr. Raphael Shuchat

In a facility for protected living in Ramat Gan live an unassuming elderly couple, Michael and Ruthy Smuss. Everyone has a story, and every life is a story lived, but those who lived through the atrocities of the Nazi regime share stories that challenge our ideas of human capabilities. At the age of 99 Michael is probably the last living survivor of the Warsaw ghetto uprising. Born in the free city of Danzig in 1926 his hair-raising story includes surviving the uprising, being put on a train to Treblinka that never arriving, once on a train to Auschwitz, twice sent to the Dachau death camp without ever getting there, surviving the Flossenbürg concentration camp, including managing to change his name in their records in order to guard his mother's anonymity and surviving the death march. Even when attacked by post trauma a decade after the war he was able to reclaim is sanity and his life in Israel. For the full story follow this link:  https://www.jpost.com/history/article-849756
