הרב ד"ר חיים פרלמוטר הוא בעל תואר ראשון בהיסטוריה של האוניברסיטה הפתוחה, תואר שני בחינוך יהודי מטעם מכללת טורו, ותואר ד"ר בהיסטוריה יהודית. עבודת הדוקטור שלו הייתה "המעמד הבינוני בחברה היהודית בארץ ישראל בתקופת התנאים 70-250 לספירה: נסתרים אך נוכחים (2011)". העבודה נכתבה בהנחייתו של פרופ' בן-ציון רוזנפלד. הוא מלמד בבית הספר ללימודי יסוד ביהדות משנת 2006.
מחקר
תחומי המחקר העיקריים שלו הם החברה והכלכלה של היהודים בעת העתיקה. בנוסף, תולדות התנאים והאמוראים, החינוך היהודי לדורותיו, וחגי ישראל בתקופת הבית השני, המשנה והתלמוד. הוא הוציא לאור ספר שהוא הרחבה של עבודת הדוקטור: ריבוד חברתי בחברה היהודית בארץ ישראל בתקופת המשנה 70-250 (אנגלית, ליידן: בריל, 2005). הוא היה שותף למחקרו של פרופ' רוזנפלד בנושא הלכות ריבית במשנה ובתלמוד (ליידן: בריל, 2023).
ד"ר חיים פרלמוטר חוקר גם כן את האופן שבו יצירות ספרותיות, תיאטראות, וסרטים מתארים את התקופות העתיקות ופרסם מאמרים בנושא זה. הוא משתמש בסרטים סרטונים וקטעי סרטים בשיעוריו ויחד עם הסטודנטים מנתח אלו מהסיטואציות בסרטים הם תולדה של ממצאים היסטוריים ארכיאולוגיים, ואלו המצאות של הסופר. הוא חוקר מהיכן באים התוספות שהסופר או המחזאי או התסריטאי הוסיפו לספר.
